Pokémon Legends: Z-A Type Chart Guide — Weaknesses & Resistances Explained

Quick Answers

How does the type chart work in Pokémon Legends Z-A?

Each attacking type deals ×2 damage to some defending types (super effective), ×½ to others (not very effective), and ×0 to immunities. For dual-type Pokémon, multiply both of its types' multipliers together.

What type should I lead with in Z-A?

Fairy and Ice are exceptional in Z-A — Fairy covers the many Dragon types, while Ice hits Dragon, Ground, Flying and Grass. Ground and Fighting give the broadest overall coverage with 5 super-effective targets each.

Do Z-A type relationships differ from Scarlet/Violet?

No — Z-A uses the same Generation 6+ chart (with Fairy) that has been standard since Pokémon X and Y.

The 18 Types

Pokémon Legends: Z-A uses the full 18-type chart: Normal, Fire, Water, Electric, Grass, Ice, Fighting, Poison, Ground, Flying, Psychic, Bug, Rock, Ghost, Dragon, Dark, Steel and Fairy. There are no new types in Z-A — the chart is identical to the one used since Generation 6.

How Multipliers Work

  • ×2 (super effective) — deal double damage.
  • ×1 (neutral) — normal damage.
  • ×½ (not very effective) — half damage.
  • ×0 (immune) — no damage at all.

For a dual-type Pokémon, multiply the two types' multipliers. Example: Talonflame (Fire/Flying) takes ×4 from Rock (×2 from Fire, ×2 from Flying) and ×0 from Ground (Flying immunity).

Best Attacking Types in Z-A

Counting super-effective targets across all 18 types:

  • Ground & Fighting — 5 super-effective types each (broadest coverage).
  • Rock & Ice — 4 each, and Ice is vital against the Dragon types in the Z-A roster.
  • Fairy — 3 targets (Fighting, Dark, Dragon), but those are the most impactful types in the Kalos meta.

Best Defensive Types

Steel resists 10 types and is immune to Poison — the best defensive type in the game. Fairy is immune to Dragon, making it invaluable against the Lumiose City dragon trainers. Water remains one of the most reliable defensive types with only two weaknesses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Normal immune to Ghost?

Yes — Normal moves cannot hit Ghost Pokémon, and Ghost moves cannot hit Normal Pokémon. This is the classic "fighting spirit" immunity that has existed since Generation 1.

Is the type chart the same as in Legends: Arceus?

Almost — Legends: Arceus used the same 18-type chart, so yes, the matchups are identical. Z-A does not reintroduce any removed types.

What is the best dual-type combination in Z-A?

Steel/Fairy is widely considered the best — 11 resistances, 2 immunities (Poison and Dragon), and only Fire and Ground as weaknesses.
